FAQs

  • How often are practices and where are they held??

Teams will practice two to three times a week for a total of six to eight times a month, weather-permitting. All practices will be held in Durango between various local facilities.

  • What days and times will my child’s team practice?

The most significant delay in practice schedule formation is practice facilities giving us their availability. Once we have this, we can start to build a team schedule. We rent space, so we are in a holding pattern until we are provided availability by the local facilities.

  • I also play on a basketball team for my school with club soccer following that. I also have plans to join the drama club this spring. Is this going to be a problem?

There is lots of research that suggest multi-sport athletes are more well-rounded and suffer less injuries. However, there are only so many hours in a day. There also has to be time for commuting, rest, sleep, and homework. Don’t overload yourself. Burnout is a real thing. If being spread too thin will cause you to miss a number of practices and/or tournaments, you may need to think about whether you’re taking on too much. Consider the local team option.

  • I hate to pay all of this money just for my kid to sit on the bench. Am I guaranteed a chance to play?

No club will make specific guarantees about playing time. However, we won’t ask your athlete to join a team with intentions of that athlete standing around or “sitting on the bench” during tournaments. We like to set players up for success which has a lot to do with team placements after tryouts. We remind parents to remember this when their athletes are disappointed about their team placement offer. Would they rather sit the bench on a top team? Or would they rather get playing time and growth opportunities on a team with the appropriate skill level?

  • My child has never played before. Can we tryout for a team?

Yes. There are no prerequisites or requirements for trying out or getting placed on a club team. We expect a range of players from “never played before” to “preparing for wanting to play in college.”

  • How many tournaments do teams go to?

It varies by age group and team to team. We’ve provided the estimated number and length above by age group. Generally speaking, younger teams attend fewer tournaments.

  • Do you publish team tournament schedules prior to tryouts? I would like to see if the schedule will fit our needs?

Most tournament dates are not posted at this time. (We expect that we will know our full spring tournament schedule no later than mid-December.) We also don’t know how many teams we’ll have and what level those teams will be until after tryouts are complete. We will setup schedules after the teams are set. We will definitely intend to make use of holiday weekends like MLK weekend and President’s Day weekend with regard to tournament travel - expect to play in a tournament those weekends. We do however intend to ensure that all tournaments are within driving distance with Phoenix and/or Las Vegas being the furthest we’ll travel during the 2024/2025 season. (This means no flights unless your family specifically prefers to fly.) We will be in touch with specific teams if this should change.

  • Why are tournaments so long?

If this is your first foray into club volleyball, tournaments will probably feel a bit overwhelming at first. However, you’ll get in a rhythm fairly quickly. Players really enjoy tournaments because it provides additional opportunities to develop beyond weekly practices and they get an opportunity to form closer bonds with their teammates.

  • Our team was admitted to one less tournament than indicated on the estimated tournament schedule above. Will we get a refund?

It depends. If that tournament was substituted for a tournament(s) of a different length, no. If it was eliminated entirely, we will refund the athlete account for a portion of the player fees since no travel or tournament fees were incurred.

  • My athlete is unable to make it to a tournament due to a time conflict, injury, etc. Will we get a refund?

No. There are no refunds when a team has been admitted into a tournament. Even if your player does not attend, the costs for attending a tournament are fixed regardless of the number of players on a team.

  • I’m interested in the local team. How far away will the tournaments be?

No further than Albuquerque or Grand Junction if we can help it.

  • We noticed this club is more expensive than another club in the area. Why is that?

We believe that coaches are our most valuable resource. Coaching is oftentimes a selfless role as the time put into it does not equate into fair compensation for the time spent. There are many hours spent on training plan preparation, physical practice several hours a week and travel time to/at/from tournaments. We have tried to close the gap somewhat on this front. We also believe that all teams need two coaches. A head coach and an assistant coach that travels with the team. Players are provided with more development opportunities when there are two sets of eyes. Also, different coaches have different strengths so we try to ensure a well-rounded coaching staff for each team. Any time we can staff a team with two coaches, we will intend to do just that.

  • Our team was only assigned one coach this season. Will we receive a refund?

It depends. If your team has 9 players or less - no. Reason being, the dues are not covering the costs of hosting this team and the club is subsidizing a portion of the costs to host this team. If you have more than 9, yes. Please contact the club director.

  • We have had a change of heart. Can we get a refund?

No, there are no refunds once a player has accepted a spot on a team.

  • We have changed our mind on tryouts. Can you refund our tryout fee?

No, SURVA memberships, USAV memberships and tryout fees are all non-refundable.

  • Are there any hidden fees?

No, beyond the advertised costs above, there are no additional expenses or hidden fees. We will not send you another invoice during the season asking for additional fees beyond what is listed above. In fact, if some tournaments don’t materialize, you can expect a refund for tournament cost if your team has more than 9 players.

  • The cost of club volleyball is high and the time commitment is more than we can handle. If I have to drop out can I just not finish paying my dues and/or get a refund?

No, ensure you can complete both your financial and time commitments to the club and to your team before accepting a slot on a team. We’ve offered a multi-pay payment plan to spread the financial burden. Most costs are front-loaded which means that it would be very difficult for our nonprofit to meet our financial obligations and remain solvent if we issued refunds.

  • Why are uniform costs so high?

You get what you pay for. The uniform package we’ve selected is a Mizuno package. We’ve selected this package because they provide high-quality products.

  • Will local teams receive the same training experience as regional teams?

Yes. The season is shorter in duration and there are fewer tournaments, so there will be fewer practices in total. There will be less travel allowing athletes more time for other opportunities. We expect local teams to practice twice a week.

  • Which coaches are assigned to my athlete’s team?

We do not intend to assign coaching staff until we’ve held tryouts. There are many moving pieces with regard the scheduling, number of teams, number of coaches, experience, etc. You will learn of the coaching assignment when you have been extended a team invitation.

  • My son wants to play volleyball, can boys tryout and play on a club team?

Yes. Mystik was created to host both boys and girls teams.

  • My company matches donations made to non-profits. Can I have my company match my donation to the club?

    YES!

  • We live in Farmington. Is this only for athletes in Durango?

No, we welcome athletes regardless of where they are from.

  • Will there be fundraising opportunities during the season?

Potentially. Fundraising opportunities will be limited to individual opportunities. Athletes can solicit donations anytime throughout the year to contribute towards their account.

  • What’s the difference between the regional team and the local team?

The regional teams compete at more tournaments. They also compete at tournaments that are further away. (Still within driving distance, just further away. Think Phoenix.) These tournaments also tend to be more competitive in nature.

  • My child was offered a spot on a team. What days will practice be?

We have not set team specific practice schedules yet. It’s a bit of a Rubik’s cube so we can’t set practice schedules until all tryouts for all age groups are completed and each team has officially been set. We need to determine how many teams in total for all age groups. We need to be sure there are scrimmage opportunities for similarly age groups. We also have some parents coaches that commute so we try to minimize their commuting back and forth. All that to say, too many moving pieces still. I can tell you that practices will start no earlier than 6p and end no later than 9p. We will also not practice on any Fridays or Saturdays.

  • My child was offered a spot on a team. What dates and where are the tournaments?

Once the teams are formalized and we’ve gotten acceptance into tournaments, we will notify families. Without acceptance from the tournament host, we aren’t formally registered.

  • How do we get our deposit or tuition payments to you?

Once we receive your signed contract, we will reply back with the link for Account Setup. Everything is handled via SportsEngine (the same website you used for tryout registration) which means you do not need to create a separate account. It’s all connected. If you’re paying by check, the system will allow you to designate that you’re mailing the check in. The Account Setup process needs to be completed even if you intend to pay via check.

  • How do we get our signed contract to you?

Email your signed contract to the email address on the “contact” page. You’ll receive a reply acknowledging the email was received.

  • Can a donation be made on behalf of an athlete?

Yes, include “Donation for XXX” in the memo section of the check and send to the mailing address on the “contact” page. The funds will be applied towards their account. The donater will receive a receipt for the tax exempt donation around January 31 of the following year.

  • How do we access our account?

Your account is managed through SportsEngine. (The same place you went when you registered your athlete for tryouts.) Use the same email address that you used for SURVA membership and tryout membership. (Ideally, these were the same email addresses.) The system is not smart enough to recognize names. It solely relies on email addresses for identification. You could end up creating multiple accounts if you use different email addresses.

  • Can we send you post dated checks for the remainder of the season?

Yes, of course. We’ll deposit them based on the date on the check.
